Most of us were handed a script about health that sounded something like this: eat better, exercise more, try to be less stressed, sleep if you remember. If you do all of that perfectly, you win.
Real life is messier.
It took me years to admit that many of my so-called health goals were actually attempts to belong somewhere I never quite felt native. I did not need another checklist. I needed a different way to think about what I was building with my one life.
That is what Health401k® is for.
Health, Reframed As An Investment Portfolio
A financial 401k is built slowly. You make deposits. Markets move. Life happens. Over time, small, aligned investments compound into something meaningful.
Your health works the same way, except the currency is your time, energy, attention, and relationships.
Just like a financial portfolio, your Health401k® is shaped by how you invest across multiple dimensions of life:
- physical – strength, stamina, mobility, energy, recovery
- emotional – mood, self-compassion, resilience, regulation
- social – friends, family, mentors, community, belonging
- intellectual – curiosity, learning, creativity, mental challenge
- environmental – the spaces you live, work, and play in
- spiritual – meaning, values, a sense of something bigger than yourself
- occupational – work, contribution, how you spend your productive hours
- financial – money habits that support, rather than sabotage, well-being
Everyone’s mix is different. What looks frivolous to one person might be a serious health investment for someone else. A weekly pinball league, a guitar lesson, a standing coffee date with a friend, a quiet walk with your dog, a therapy appointment, finally learning how to rest without guilt. All of these can be legitimate deposits in your health portfolio, depending on your story and your why.
Why So Much Health Advice Falls Flat
Most health advice talks to the individual and pretends the environment is neutral. It suggests that if you are not thriving, you simply need more discipline or a better morning routine.
If kale works for you, wonderful. If not, congratulations, you are still human.
In my experience, people rarely change in isolation. They change when their environment changes: who they spend time with, what they are rewarded for, what feels normal, what feels possible, how safe they feel in their own body and relationships.
That is why the core philosophy behind Health401k® is simple:
People change people. Environments shape outcomes.
When your physical surroundings, daily rhythms, and social world line up with the kind of life you want to be living, aligned behaviors start to emerge with much less friction. When they do not, no habit app in the world can save you for long.
The First Seed: TeddyLift-A-Lot™
Long before Health401k® had a name, I was trying to teach kids that small choices compound into lifelong returns. In 2004, I created a character named Teddy Lift-A-Lot™, a cheerful, suit-wearing teddy bear who helped children see that moving their bodies, trying new things, and practicing healthy habits were like putting coins into a future they could not see yet. I did not have the language of portfolios or dimensions back then, but the instinct was the same: health is something you build, one small decision at a time, inside an environment that makes those decisions feel possible.
For Kids And Families: Piggy Bank Advisor®
Today, that same instinct shows up in our kids program, Piggy Bank Advisor®, led by my wife, Adria S. Woods, M.S., CCC-SLP, a pediatric speech-language pathologist. Using a character named Charlie Francis, children earn tokens for simple investments like playing outside, practicing kindness, reading with a parent, helping at home, or trying a creative hobby. Each token is a tiny health investment, reinforcing that well-being is not just about being more physical. It is also emotional, social, intellectual, and environmental. Parents become guides and environment designers, not drill sergeants.
In other words: the same philosophy that shapes the adult version of Health401k® is already at work in the next generation.
What Your Health Portfolio Might Actually Look Like
If you are expecting a list of rules, this is the part where I disappoint you in the best possible way.
Your Health401k® is not meant to look like mine, your neighbor’s, or the internet’s. It is meant to look like a life you would actually want to keep living.
For one person, a serious health investment might be joining a powerlifting gym and training four days per week because feeling strong in a deeply physical way quiets their anxiety and gives them community. For someone else, the same level of investment might show up as a biweekly book club that stretches their thinking in the intellectual dimension and anchors them in reliable social connection. Another person might find their biggest returns from walking with a friend after dinner and finally getting eight hours of sleep, because their nervous system has carried a lot for a long time in the emotional dimension.
There is no single right mix. There is only the portfolio that reflects the life you are in, the life you are moving toward, and the constraints and privileges you are actually working with.
Looking Ten, Twenty, Thirty Years Ahead
A traditional financial advisor might ask you: Where do you want to be in ten, twenty, thirty years? Then they work backward.
Health401k® asks a parallel set of questions:
- What do you want your body to be able to do ten years from now in the physical dimension?
- What kind of relationships do you hope to be anchored in within the social and emotional dimensions?
- What do you want to still be curious about or learning in the intellectual dimension?
- What kind of environments do you want to wake up in, work in, and rest in inside the environmental and occupational dimensions?
- What level of stability do you hope for in the financial dimension, and how do you want money to support, not dominate, your life?
- What would it mean to feel aligned in the spiritual dimension, regardless of your specific beliefs?
Once you know what you are working toward, your health decisions stop being about willpower and start being about alignment. You are not trying to become a different person overnight. You are learning to design environments where the person you already are has a better chance to flourish.
So Where Do You Start?
For this first conversation, I am not going to tell you what to do. No five step plan. No thirty day challenge.
Instead, I invite you to sit with a few questions:
- When you look back over your life so far, what has actually made you feel most alive in the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual dimensions?
- Which environments have quietly supported your health without you realizing it at the time?
- Who are the people who changed your trajectory, even a little? What did they make possible for you?
- What small, sustainable investment could you make this year that your future self would be grateful for in ten years?
You do not have to answer these perfectly. Simply becoming curious about them is a meaningful first deposit.
Your health portfolio is already under construction. The real question is whether you want to start shaping it on purpose.
