Some of the most meaningful health investments do not look like health at all. Sometimes, they sound like music shared between friends.

Music is more than entertainment.

  • It is social.
  • It is bonding.
  • It is memory.
  • It is a bridge between past, present, and future.

Music gives us access to stories we might never think to tell.

The Experience

A multi-generational group of friends created a shared playlist using Spotify, allowing everyone
to contribute and iterate in real time.

For this, we curated rock and roll spanning five decades.

  • We leaned into our friends’ musical interests.
  • They leaned into ours.
  • The overlap revealed shared history.
  • The differences sparked curiosity.

We quickly learned which songs carried meaning beyond enjoyment or nostalgia. Some were
tied to pivotal life moments. Others acted as emotional timestamps.

We also introduced a simple rule: each person gets three “non-starters.”

These are songs that, for any reason, do not land. Sometimes they are connected to difficult
memories. Sometimes we simply do not enjoy the tone or cadence. What surprised us is that
these non-starters often became conversation starters, creating opportunities for deeper
understanding and connection.

Occasionally, music outside our usual window appeared and completely lit us up. Discovery
became shared enjoyment.

This is technology doing what it does best when used intentionally: creating pathways to human connection. We are not endorsing Spotify specifically. It simply happens to be the platform we
use.

Inviting newer friends, or even strangers with a shared musical vibe, creates low-pressure
opportunities to connect, converse, and build relationships organically.

A Multi-Dimensional Investment in Our Health401k®

Emotional: Sharing interests. Learning about others. Opening conversations. Allowing parts of ourselves to be present within a group, while still feeling protected.

Environmental: Music shifts mood. It changes tone and cadence. Depending on the playlist, it can soften a space or energize it.

Intellectual: Exposure to different artists, sequencing choices, and musical approaches expands perspective.

Social: Connecting with friends. Sharing something meaningful. Broadening social circles. In several cases, this led to attending concerts together for artists we did not realize we mutually appreciated.

Spiritual: Music is a gateway.

Closing Thought

Who do you share music with, and what might it reveal if you listened together more
intentionally?
